When it comes to interior design, rug size is just as important as style or color. A rug that’s too small can make a room feel disconnected, while one that’s too large can overwhelm the space. Here’s a practical guide to help you choose the right rug size for every room in your home.
1. Living Room
Recommended Rug Sizes: 8x10 ft or 9x12 ft
Layout Tips:
All legs on: Place all furniture legs (sofa, chairs, coffee table) on the rug for a unified look. This works best in larger rooms.
Front legs on: If your space is smaller, place only the front legs of your seating furniture on the rug. This still connects the furniture while saving space.
Floating rug (not ideal): Avoid rugs that only sit under the coffee table. This can make the room feel disjointed.
Visual Example: Imagine a rectangular rug placed under a three-seater sofa and two chairs arranged around a coffee table, with at least 12 inches of rug extending past the furniture edges.
2. Bedroom
Recommended Rug Sizes: 6x9 ft (Queen), 8x10 ft (King)
Layout Tips:
Under the bed: Place the rug under the bed, extending at least 18–24 inches beyond the sides and foot of the bed.
Avoid placing under nightstands. Start the rug just in front of them if you want to save on cost.
Alternatives: Use two runners on each side of the bed instead of a single large rug.
Visual Example :A rug starts just below the nightstands and stretches beyond the foot of a queen bed, with ample rug space on each side for stepping out comfortably.
3. Dining Room
Recommended Rug Sizes: 8x10 ft or larger
Layout Tips:
Choose a rug that extends at least 24 inches beyond the edge of the dining table on all sides. This ensures chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out.
Round table? Use a round rug that mimics the table’s shape for cohesion.
Visual Example: A rectangular rug under a six-person dining table with all chairs resting fully on the rug, even when pushed back.
4. Entryway & Hallways
Recommended Rug Sizes: Depends on space — 2.5x7 ft or 3x10 ft runners
Layout Tips:
For narrow hallways, use a centered runner rug with 4–6 inches of floor visible on each side.
In entryways, a small rug (3x5 ft) centered in front of the door works well.
Visual Example: A long, narrow runner runs the length of a hallway with symmetrical floor space on either side, guiding the eye through the corridor.
5. Home Office
Recommended Rug Sizes: 5x7 ft or 6x9 ft
Layout Tips:
Ensure the rug fits both your desk and chair — even when the chair is pulled back.
A rug under just the desk can work if the chair moves minimally.
Visual Example: A rug extends beyond a desk and rolling chair, so the chair remains on the rug throughout movement.
